Xoom Vs. iPad: The Real Tablet Wars Begin

Motorola couldn't have chosen a worse time to start selling the Xoom, the first real Apple iPad competitor. Just as the Xoom went on sale on Verizon, Apple dropped an iBomb in the shape of a press invitation next week to the unveiling of the next generation iPad (let's call it the iPad 2).


But even with the iPad 2 looming, Motorola's Xoom will have to go head to head with the original iPad. If you can't hold on a bit longer without a tablet, here's how the Xoom and iPad stack up against each other.



Impressive Specs
The Motorola Xoom packs some serious specs, making the original iPad look a bit behind the times. It runs on a Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz (iPad has single-core 1GHz), has 1GB of RAM (vs. the iPad's 256MB) and rocks not one, but two, cameras: a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling and a 5-megapixel one at the back, while the iPad has no cameras at all. The Xoom's screen is also slightly larger (10.1-inch vs. 9.7-inch), and the resolution is slightly higher too (1280 by 800 pixels on the Xoom, 1024 by 768 pixels on the iPad). Dell XPS 17 3D: Speedy, and in Stereo

It seems like only yesterday that a Dell XPS 17 last passed through the PCWorld Labs, yet here we have another one. That always seems to happen when a new CPU generation launches. Toss a capable GPU and 3D stereoscopic capability into the new model, and you have a feature-rich desktop replacement.

The XPS 17 3D reviewed here ships with an Intel Core i7 2820QM clocking in at 2.30GHz but capable of pushing to a full 3.4GHz in Turbo Boost mode. This is one of Intel's latest quad-core processors built on the new Sandy Bridge architecture's 32nm manufacturing process. It's a major improvement over past Intel quad-core mobile CPUs, offering faster clocks, more robust power management, and overall better performance.

The display provides the 120Hz refresh rate and IR emitter necessary for stereoscopic 3D. We used it with an aftermarket set of Nvidia's 3DVision glasses, and everything works quite well. Driving the display is an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M mobile GPU. Dell has beefed up the resolution of the display to true 1080p.

Most of the other features are comparable to those of the earlier XPS 17, including dual hard drives, four USB ports (the two on the rear are USB 3.0 capable), 802.11n, a Blu-ray drive, and both HDMI and mini-DisplayPort digital video output connectors.

Our test system's performance in standard desktop apps was stellar, producing one of the highest scores we've seen from a laptop on WorldBench 6, an impressive mark of 151. The new Intel CPU, coupled with a staggering 16GB of main memory, were no doubt major factors. You'll pay for this power, however: The XPS 17 3D starts at $1450, and the configuration we reviewed will run you $2389 (prices as of February 2, 2011).

Gmail accidentally resetting accounts, years of correspondence vanish into the cloud?

If you've got a working Gmail account, you might want to back it up every so often -- as many as 500,000 Gmail users lost access to their inboxes this morn, and some of them are reporting (via Twitter and support forums) that years worth of messages, attachments and Google Chat logs had vanished by the time they were finally able to log on. While we haven't experienced the issue personally, we're hearing that the bug effectively reset some accounts, treating their owners as new users complete with welcome messages. For its part, Google says that the issue "affects less than .29% of the Google Mail userbase," engineers are working to fix the issue right now, and that missing messages will be restored as soon as possible. We'll soon see if this is a momentary setback... or a lengthy wakeup call.

Dell Venue Pro Review: Superb Design, Extra-Large Size

The Dell Venue Pro was an instant standout during the initial Windows Phone 7 launch last year. It's unique form factor, extra large display and portrait slider QWERTY really separated it from the bunch. Does the actual handset live up to the positive knee-jerk expectations, though?

Physically, it’s one solid piece of hardware with a sturdy build and really premium touches. The extra-large size (4.8 inches tall and half an inch thick!) can automatically eliminate it as an option for some, though. Display is a 4.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen (480 x 800 resolution) with rich colors, excellent brightness and plenty of sharpness. Viewing from a variety of angles is no trouble, although it washes out just a bit under sunlight (still plenty usable, though).

LG GD510 Mobile Phone

LG will release the LG GD510 cell phone next month in Europe. The phone comes jam packed with a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 400, a 3-megapixel camera, and a 8GB of storage space to store your captured pictures or videos. The LG GD510 also has an optional solar panel add-on, which will replace the battery cover with a solar panel for recharging your battery. Sadly, there is no info on pricing so far.

Sony Ericsson T715 Preview

Phone Arena previews the Sony Ericsson T715. It is a stylish slider, which doesnt surprise with industry-first features, but still offers all the functions the general user needs. The key aspect of the phone is its ability to organize your day through smart desktop and birthday reminders. The QVGA resolution screen of the new device measures 2.2 inches. The T715 also has a 3.2MP camera with Photo light.

Another of HP’s winners, it is a full HD laptop, capable of attaining the full 1,920×1,080 resolution. Deemed as an ideal replacement for an ailing desktop, it has a crisp and bright display screen at 16 inches is truly a sight to see and coupled with the BluRay optical drive, it makes movie viewing a breeze. Loaded with a 2.26 Gz processor with Intel’s Core 2 Duo P800 processor and 4GB’s of ram it it fast, though not as fast as people would expect it to be with that processing power contained within. External devices can be easily connected with a FireWire, HDMI, and d-Sub connector for those cameras and external display devices. It does sport quite a slick finish that is quite childish to some and the ultra-glossy finish tends to be prone to finger smudges and other greasy stuff as you much away and continue to blog or finish your report that was due a few hours ago

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is an arc slider mobile phone delivering a premium, converged mobile experience addressing web communication and multimedia entertainment.

The XPERIA X1 runs Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1, an open platform and applications designed for X1 will run on other Windows Mobile 6.1 devices with the same screen resolution and hardware features. 2 New XpressMusic Handsets launched by Nokia

Nokia has added two more devices to its music range of handsets: the 5220 and the 5320 XpressMusic. "Today's additions to the XpressMusic range up the ante with new ways for consumers to access their media, as well as interact and share content with friends and communities anytime, anywhere," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, LIVE category, Nokia.The 5320 features 3G social entertainment capabilities with Web 2.0 access. A new voice-controlled Say and Play feature lets you say the name of an artist or song to play it. Like other XpressMusic handsets, the 5320 also has dedicated music keys, and thankfully a 3.5mm audio jack. According to Nokia, the handset can deliver up to 24 hours of playback time.Other features include an audio chip for hi-fi sound quality, extendable memory up to 8GB, HS-USB for fast music transfer, and HSDPA for fast access to data. This loaded handset has a full-featured Internet browser, access to Ovi, and Nokia Search 4.1, which allows users to find and share media content and information. It also allows for N-Gage gaming in the convenient landscape mode.
The other handset (Nokia 5220 XpressMusic) seems to have a bit of a lopsided design. No, it's not your eyes playing tricks; the phone is actually designed that way. It has a built-in lanyard that makes it easy to carry around. Other features include dedicated XpressMusic keys, a 3.5mm audio jack, and support for external memory via microSD cards.



These handsets are equipped with 2 megapixel cameras and FM radios. Two New Nokia Entry Level Mobile Phones

Europe: Nokia unveiled the Nokia 2600 classic and the Nokia 1209, two mobile
handsets that offer useful features, range of colors or exchangeable
covers for consumers in emerging markets. Nokia 2600 classic, which
will retail for approximately 65 euros before applicable taxes or
subsidies, has begun shipping, ramping up in all key markets during the
first quarter of 2008. Nokia 1209 will become available globally during
the second quarter of 2008 and will retail for approximately 35 euros
before applicable taxes or subsidies.

The highlight of today's announcement is the Nokia 2600 classic which

allows consumers to customize their phone with colourful, fully
changeable Xpress-on covers and MP3 ring tones. The cheerful Nokia
2600 classic also features a number of entertainment features,
including an FM radio and a VGA camera.

emerging markets, the overwhelming feedback we receive from consumers
in these markets is that they want their mobile device to complement

Survey results: phone sharing in emerging markets on the rise

According to a recent Nokia survey of consumers in emerging markets, a new trend
appears to be emerging: phone sharing. More than 50% of respondents in
India, Pakistan and nearly 30% in Vietnam indicate that they share, or
would share, their mobile phone with family or friends - a figure which
contrasts consumer behaviour in more mature markets.

"Phone sharing is a logical trend - more and more families are purchasing a
mobile phone for the entire family to use, not just the head of the
household. In addition, digital cameras are quickly becoming more
popular in these markets, and as such taking and sharing digital images
is becoming more common," adds Lambeek. "In response, Nokia has
developed a number of innovative features like the multiple phonebook
to support phone sharing, and we have added technologies like Bluetooth
to some models to make transferring images and ringtones easy and
affordable."

The second model introduced today, the Nokia 1209, offers additional cost

management features to make phone sharing easy and convenient.
Innovations include the pre-paid tracker, a cost-tracking application,
and the multiple phonebook - which allows up to five people to store
personal contact lists of up to two hundred numbers on a single phone.
Designed for first time buyers, the Nokia 1209 incorporates Nokia's

Dark Silver LG Viewty 3G Mobile Phone

/ Europe : LG Electronics launched a new Dark Silver colour option for
its popular LG Viewty professional-level camera phone, which has now
sold over 550,000 units.



LG will begin offering the LG Viewty in Dark Silver in addition the
current black. LG chose this new colour to further the LG Viewty’s
polished, premium image, after researching colour preferences in
countries where the phone is sold and colour trend forecasts for 2008.



“With this new Dark Silver colour option LG has made the LG Viewty even
better, giving buyers an opportunity to customize their phones with a
new high-tech finish that is still professional and complements its
overall design,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG
